Remedies for Bloated Belly or Abdomen

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) a bloated belly or abdomen is often due to digestive weakness. Digestive weakness is caused by such things as eating the wrong foods, overeating and irregular mealtimes.

However, in TCM, a diagnosis of weak digestion causing bloating does depend on other things such as whether there is pain, whether the bloating occurs after eating, whether there are symptoms such as tiredness and lack of appetite and other factors.

The Right Diet is Essential

Chinese herbal medicine is a highly effective remedy for bloating, with or without pain, but to get the most from herbal therapy it is vital that you also adjust your diet and lifestyle, otherwise you will not get lasting results.

As TCM recognizes that everyone is a unique individual, there is no single diet or herbal remedy for a bloated belly or abdomen. However, there are certain foods, drinks and habits that commonly contribute to the problem. Foods and drinks as causes of bloating include heavy, hard to digest foods like overcooked meats, cold foods like raw vegetables and salads, iced drinks, icecream, beer, soda and stodgy junk foods like burgers and pizza.

Cold, Raw, Iced Foods and Drinks as Causes of Bloating

Why can cold, raw foods and cold drinks cause bloating of the belly or abdomen? In TCM, cooking foods is regarded as a pre-digestion process. Eating foods cooked and warm facilitates digestion and absorption of nutrients. Eating foods and drinks that are cold, raw or iced impedes and weakens digestion.

Yes, raw foods have health benefits but if eaten excessively they can weaken your digestion. Raw foods take far more digestive power to break down than cooked foods. The point is this: If you consume a lot of cold, raw foods and cold, iced drinks and you often have a bloated belly or abdomen this could be the reason. Try eating more cooked meals and do not drink iced drinks, especially with meals!

Chinese Herbal Remedies

A change in diet may not be enough for some people with a long-term case of bloating. In this case Chinese herbal medicine is necessary as it can address the underlying cause of the problem on a deeper level than diet alone. Chinese herbal remedies for bloating contain natural herbs which nourish the digestive organs and facilitate the digestive process.

Chinese Medical Diagnosis

As repeatedly explained throughout this site, though, to find out which Chinese herbal remedies and diet are best for you, you need a Chinese medicine diagnosis, not just a Western medicine diagnosis. The FAQ page suggests ways to find a TCM practitioner.
