Chinese Herbal Flatulence Remedy

Looking for a flatulence remedy that also treats the underlying causes of flatulence? Traditional Chinese natural remedies for flatulence are based on classic herbal formulas. With a Chinese herbal flatulence remedy and the right diet, stopping flatulence is relatively easy.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) the main causes of flatulence are diet and emotions, i.e. what, how and when you eat and eating when you are emotionally upset or angry.

Diet and Flatulence

Generally, TCM advises that a natural diet of mainly cooked foods eaten warm is the most beneficial for good digestion and overall health. Cooked foods are easily digested and assimilated. Cold, raw foods require more digestive power to break them down and if eaten excessively they can weaken your digestive system causing flatulence, bloating, diarrhea, fatigue and other problems.

Overeating in general should be avoided, especially if you suffer from flatulence (or indigestion, bloating, constipation, etc). Certain foods like beans, onions and dairy products are more likely to produce excessive gas in your digestive system and should be avoided or reduced if you suffer from flatulence. Carbonated drinks also tend to cause flatulence.

If your flatulence is foul-smelling and your tongue has a thick, sticky coating it suggests stagnation of food in your stomach and intestines. Food stagnation results from overeating, eating the wrong types of foods and/or weak digestion.

If you suffer from flatulence try eating smaller, evenly spaced meals of easily digested, nourishing foods. Soups, stews, steamed vegetables and rice congee are good choices. Small amounts only of lean meat (not overly cooked) are advised. Chew your food well and do not eat when emotionally upset.

Emotions and Flatulence

In TCM emotions such as anger, frustration and irritability are associated with the liver. When experienced excessively, these emotions can upset liver function. If your flatulence is worsened by these kinds of emotions it typically indicates a liver imbalance. As the liver has a close relationship with the digestive organs, an imbalance in liver function can cause digestive imbalances like flatulence, bloating and others.

If you are often angry (or frustrated or irritable) you need to find and remove the cause. Otherwise, over time, these emotions may cause far worse problems than flatulence. As mentioned above you should not eat if you feel emotionally upset.

Chinese Medicine Diagnosis and Flatulence Remedy

While you will most certainly need to look at your diet if you have flatulence, there are certain Chinese natural remedies for flatulence you can take too. These should be taken based on a TCM diagnosis because TCM recognizes more than one cause of flatulence.

Maybe you have flatulence due to liver imbalance, maybe it us due to food stagnation, maybe it is due to weak digestion OR maybe it is due to a combination of these. A professional TCM diagnosis is the only way to know and to know precisely which flatulence remedy is best for you.

See the FAQ section (No.9) for how to find a TCM practitioner, such as a Chinese herbalist. In the meantime you can start to look at what and how you eat as causes of flatulence.
