Lower Back Pain Remedy

The classic Chinese lower back pain remedy is often a combination of therapies such as herbal medicine, acupuncture, massage and exercise. This article focuses on Chinese herbs for back pain. However, links are included to lower back pain stretches and massage techniques you can try on yourself for lower back pain. Acupuncture and herbal medicine must be done by a professional practitioner.

There are many Chinese herbs for back pain, which are usually combined into a formula and taken several times a day. Depending on the cause of your lower back pain and your lower back pain symptoms and also what other health problems you have, different herbal formulations are possible.

Possible Causes of Lower Back Pain

If you have suffered an injury and you have lower back pain symptoms such as sharp pain and inability to turn or bend, specific herbs will be prescribed to relax the muscles, move the blood and stop pain. If you have lower back pain symptoms like dull pain that is better with rest, it suggests weak kidneys (a common cause in Chinese medicine), and you will be given a formula that stops lower back pain by improving kidney function. There are other causes of lower back pain in Chinese medicine but the two mentioned are common ones.

The exact location of the pain also determines not just the cause but also the treatment. For example, back pain lower right side may be due to a simple muscle strain or something worse such as sciatic nerve compression, herniated disc or kidney infection. Back pain lower left side may also be due to a muscle injury or kidney problem, or pregnancy. Most cases of lower back pain though are due to overuse or misuse of the lower back from working, sitting, lifting, etc.

Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs For Back Pain

If you have chronic, long term lower back pain or even if you just sometimes get lower back pain from work or sports for example, I recommend you see a practitioner of Chinese herbal medicine or acupuncture. These are time-tested, well-developed therapies that typically treat pain very well.

Self-Help Techniques

While Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture must be prescribed by a professional, you can apply Chinese herbal plasters and herbal liniments on yourself for lower back pain. These remedies are for external application. Chinese herbal plasters and herbal liniments are very effective at stopping pain - both muscle and joint pain - and give constant pain relief over the course of a day or night. They may be used elsewhere on the body too, such as the upper back, neck and shoulders. Also recommended is this program of lower back pain exercises which I have used many times over the years to stop lower back pain in myself and others.

If you have questions about any of the above methods that make up the traditional Chinese lower back pain remedy be sure to let me know. I have a lot of experience with lower back pain having had it myself and treating many people with it in Australia for ten years.
