Natural Constipation Remedies

Chinese herbal natural constipation remedies are non addictive and safe. These herbal constipation remedies have been proven to work in China over a period of not less than 2000 years. They work for anyone, regardless of geographic location, nationality, age or gender.

They work because they re-balance bowel function and the function of other organs involved in constipation like the liver. And they work because they can be tailored to suit the unique constitution and symptoms of each individual.

TCM Causes of Constipation

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) recognizes a number of underlying causes of constipation. These include faulty diet and emotional stress. In TCM the organ most affected by emotional stress is the liver. The liver is responsible for the free flow of vital energy (qi) throughout the body. When the liver's free flow function is impaired (through excessive emotions like frustration, anger and irritability and through excessive alcohol, drug and food intake) blood and other fluids become stuck too. Other organs, such as the bowels, also become stuck resulting in constipation.

Herbal Constipation Remedies

Chinese herbal constipation remedies are formulas containing up to a dozen or more individual herbs. Some herbs moisten the bowels, some clear heat in the bowels that has built up through bad diet, while others regulate liver function. The exact type and number of herbs in your Chinese herbal constipation medicine will depend entirely on your TCM diagnosis.

Chinese Medicine Diagnosis

Even though I am talking about natural constipation remedies here, an accurate TCM diagnosis is essential. If you don't know the underlying TCM cause of your constipation you cannot know which remedy to take. For a TCM diagnosis you need to see a TCM practitioner. A Western medicine diagnosis of constipation is not enough to effectively prescribe Chinese herbal constipation remedies. See my FAQ page (No.9) for how to find a TCM practitioner.

Meanwhile, if you have constipation you can start looking for possible dietary and emotional factors causing the problem.

Diet and Constipation

TCM recommends a natural diet of mostly cooked foods eaten warm. Raw foods and salads have health benefits but lightly cooked foods eaten warm are more easily digested and therefore more beneficial to your digestive organs and bowels.

Generally, if you are constipated you should avoid:

  • Stodgy junk foods like white bread, pizza and cakes
  • Alcohol, coffee, drugs and unnecessary medications
  • Commercialized dairy products like cheese, icecream, milk and yogurt
  • Fried or spicy foods
  • Overeating any foods, especially at night before bed

Emotions and Constipation

As touched on above, excessive "liver" emotions such as anger, frustration and irritability can hinder liver function and therefore bowel function. If you experience emotions like these on a daily or regular basis you need to find the cause and remove it - regardless of whether or not you are constipated. These are damaging emotions and over time can cause serious health problems.

If you have constipation Chinese herbal constipation remedies can certainly help you but you still need to address any dietary or emotional factors. Otherwise you will not get lasting results!
