Chinese Herbal
Sinus Infection Remedies

Chinese herbal sinus infection remedies - like the remedies for sinus headaches - are an effective treatment for sinus problems due to viral or bacterial activity, food allergies or pollen allergies.

These natural remedies for sinus infections treat such sinus infection symptoms as fever, facial pain and yellow mucus congestion. And, like the sinus headache remedies, Chinese herbal remedies for sinus infections may be combined with other herbal remedies to treat underlying causes of the problem. Other remedies may also be taken during remission stages for preventing sinus infections.

Outlined below are some common Chinese herbal remedies for sinus infections. Note that these are just a few examples of remedies that herbalists may prescribe when treating a sinus infection. Contact me for more information.

Acute Sinus Infections

1. Coptis Resolve Toxin Pills (Huang Lian Jie Du Wan in Chinese)

This first sinus infection remedy is a very strong herbal antibiotic. It may be used for treating acute sinus infections, causing such sinus infection symptoms as fever, facial pain or facial pressure, inflamed sinuses, congested nose and nasal discharge.

It contains several of Chinese medicine's most powerful antibacterial herbs - coptis, scute, phellodendron and gardenia - and is an excellent natural alternative to Western antibiotics. This remedy is, by nature, very cold though and if taken for too long can cause diarrhea and other problems.

2. Nasal Allergy Pills (Bi Min Gan Wan)

This second herbal sinus remedy clears blocked nasal passages, reduces inflammation and stops sinus pain. It may be used in cases of sinus infection or allergic sinusitis with headache, facial pain or pressure, and thick, sticky yellow or green nasal discharge. This remedy contains such ingredients as magnolia and xanthium to open the nose, and mint and chrysanthemum to clear heat from the head.

Chronic Sinus Infections

1. Bupleurum & Peony Pills (Jia Wei Xiao Yao Wan)

This is not specifically a sinus infection remedy. Rather it relieves the emotional stress that so often underlies or aggravates chronic conditions, including chronic sinus infections, chronic sinus headaches and chronic sinus congestion.

For best results, a specific sinus infection remedy would also need to be taken at the same time as this one. The major herbs in this remedy are bupleurum which relaxes the liver (the liver is, according to Chinese medicine, the main organ affected by stress) and moutan which clears heat and cools the blood.

2. Clear Qi, Transform Phlegm Pills (Qing Qi Hua Tan Wan)

This remedy is another one that may be used in cases of sinus infection with thick, sticky, yellow/green phlegm clogging the sinuses. Biomedically, it is an expectorant (promotes ejection of mucus), decongestant (breaks up congestion), febrifuge (stops fever) and antitussive (stops cough). According to TCM, yellow or green phlegm is a sign of excess heat in the body, so herbs to clear heat and transform phlegm are needed. These include arisaema, scutellaria and trichosanthes.

Preventing Sinus Infections

1. Jade Screen Formula (Yu Ping Feng San Wan)

This remedy may be used during remission stages to strengthen resistance and prevent sinus infections and other respiratory problems. It is taken in between sinus (and other) infections, not while you actually have a respiratory infection. The main ingredient is astragalus, which boosts resistance to allergies. The other main ingredient, atractylodes, assists astragalus to strengthen resistance.
